I am an avid collector of book illustrations and newspaper photographs. My picture collection spans a wide variety of categories that range  from children's books, and comics , to books about plants and animals. I have developed a format of working that is based on the size of a large sheet of copy paper, 11"x17". The pictures I am interested in using are enlarged on a copy machine to this size or smaller. The copies are then split into two basic categories, vertical and horizontal. Before starting a painting, I look through my picture collection and find illustrations that compliment each other as overlaps. The chosen pictures are painted directly on the back of the copied paper using a light table. This painted paper is then torn down and transferred to the canvas using gloss medium. To complete the process the paper is washed and scrubbed off the canvas leaving the painted imagery.
My newspaper paintings are seperate from my paintings using  illustrations.I first cut out pictures from the newspaper and sort them into files that range from standing figures and other cultures to dance and sports. Then I enlarge the pictures on a copy machine and cut out figures and glue them over other pictures and copy them again. These pictures are then painted over and transfered to canvas.
Recently I have been painting an abstract base as the bottom layer to transfer imagery over. I am interested in the juxtaposition of abstract and narrative imagery. My paintings are like puzzles. They evolve slowly with attention given to color combinations, balance and compositions. I paint pictures sideways, upside down and right side up. I do not want my work to be read easily. The viewer is invited to meander through multiple narratives and meanings.
